Summer Safety: The 60-Second Home Audit

High heat and humidity are silent threats to senior safety. Before the summer peak, take 60 seconds to perform these three critical checks to ensure your home is a sanctuary, not a hazard.

As we move into the summer months, the physiological response to heat changes. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can set in much faster for older adults, often mimicking the signs of cognitive decline.

Your 60-Second Audit:

  1. The Thermostat Test: Ensure the A/C is set to a consistent 72–75°F. Check the air filters; a clogged filter can lead to poor air quality and respiratory stress.

  2. The "Hydration Station": Place a clear, chilled water carafe in the room where your loved one spends the most time. If they "forget" to drink, focus on water-rich snacks like chilled watermelon or cucumbers.

  3. The Med-Storage Check: Heat and humidity can degrade the effectiveness of certain medications. Move pill boxes away from sunny windows or humid bathrooms to a cool, dry drawer.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) warns that heat-related illnesses (hyperthermia) are a significant risk for seniors, as the body's ability to sweat effectively decreases with age.
